Last night, Wiltshire Police celebrated the first Force Awards ceremony of 2017.

Twenty-four award recipients made up of officers, staff, specials, members of the public and Police Dog Fozzy received awards from chief constable Mike Veale and Lord-Lieutenant Sarah Troughton.

Chief constable Mike Veale said: “This year will mark my 33rd year in the police service and the Force Awards is a timely reminder of the many fantastic things that happen within the service.

“It provides a glimpse into the work of the Force and I’m delighted that I’ve had a chance to say thank you for the outstanding contribution to the Force and to our public, and also show appreciation to friends, family and loved ones who provide them with such support.

“Award ceremonies like this also remind us all that policing isn’t just a job, it’s a way of life and I am incredibly proud of everyone involved. It’s absolutely brilliant to also recognise the amazing actions of our members of the public – all I can say is wow.

“Their stories are absolutely incredible and I’d like them to accept my sincerest thanks on behalf of the force and wider public for their support and contribution to keeping people safe.”

Angus Macpherson, police and crime commissioner for Wiltshire and Swindon, said: “I never fail to be inspired and uplifted by the stories of courage, dedication and determination that are told at each of our Force awards ceremonies.

“When two members of our volunteer Special Constabulary place themselves in harm’s way to bring an alleged violent offender into custody, then I am particularly humbled and grateful.

“As the citation makes clear, these two Special Constables gave chase when the suspect fled. One of the two officers was a probationer at the time and was being tutored by the other.”

“Apprehending a suspect who had allegedly been involved in a knife incident, with no thought for their own safety, was in the finest traditions of the police service. I salute them both.”
